The Fourth Stanza Stone

the Beck stone

the Beck stone

This stone, found amongst purple heather on Ilkley Moors, marks what seems the start of a stream running down a hill. If you go looking for it yourself, beware that it is not where you may expect it to be. It is found on a strange and not very noticeable turning off the main path.

Ilkley Moors are very different to the moors of the other stanza stones. It reminds me more of Hampstead Heath; there is not the sense of sheer wilderness or howling wind that was present at the other locations. Ilkley is home to the Ilkley Literature Festival, which takes place in October, and also the amazing teashop ‘Betty’s’, which I couldn’t resist quickly visiting.
