The Fifth and Final Stanza Stone

I had never been through a coniferous wood like this before. Trees are arranged in lines, there is no light and everything green is fluorescent green. This wood is in Silsden, between Haworth and Ilkley.

The stones are what you meet as you come out of the woods.

Annoyingly, I ran out of time for visiting the Puddle Stones. I guess this means I’ll have to go up to Ilkley again.

It is definitely an interesting project, exploring the different forms of water by using different structures that are likely to last and become more integrated into the environment over time. Water goes from being morbid (in Mist), to melancholy (in Snow), to a blessing (in Rain), to something almost passionate (in Dew). This has certainly given Armitage lots of freedom, not only for choice of place but for the poems themselves. Water is important, not only for nourishment of the moors, but for contributing to the landscapes which have inspired so many writers.
